Overview of 3G / 4G LTE Wi-Fi router TP-Link TL-MR6400 with support for SIM cards
To organize access to the Internet through the network of a mobile operator, now you do not need to buy a modem, select a router for it, or use your smartphone in modem mode as a router (which is not very convenient and not always possible). We only need a TP-Link TL-MR6400 router and a SIM card from any operator. And in a few minutes, we can get fast internet on all our devices that have 3G/4G coverage.
TP-Link TL-MR6400 is a regular fixed router, but with a built-in 3G/4G modem and a SIM card slot. And it’s very convenient. You can not connect to wired Internet everywhere. Especially in villages, dachas, etc. There are many places where the only way to connect to the Internet is the 3G / 4G network of one or several operators. And if earlier we had to buy a USB modem for a SIM card of a certain operator and look for a router that will work with this modem (and this is not always easy to do, I wrote about it here), now you can install TP-Link TL-MR6400 and just insert a SIM card into it.After that, we will be able to connect devices to the Internet via a Wi-Fi network and using a network cable. Depending on the operators available in your region (coverage) and your tasks, you can choose the appropriate tariff and purchase a separate SIM card specifically for the router.
The technical characteristics of the TP-Link TL-MR6400 are the most common. Wi-Fi network router distributes at speeds up to 300 Mbps. There are 3 LAN ports and 1 LAN/WAN port. And this means that the router can work not only with a SIM card but also as a regular router with an Ethernet WAN port (you can change the operating mode).
For some reason, everyone writes that external antennas are used to receive a 4G signal. And Wi-Fi antennas are built-in. But on the official website, in the characteristics of the TL-MR6400 v3, the opposite is true: 2 built-in 4G LTE antennas and 2 external Wi-Fi antennas. I don’t know how it really is, but the reception of a 3G / 4G signal from a router is better than from a smartphone.
The setup is very simple. I didn’t even set up an internet connection. I just inserted a SIM card, turned on the router and it immediately started distributing the Internet. You only need to set a password to protect the control panel of the router and set the Wi-Fi network settings (not necessary, but desirable). The settings are in English, but it’s not difficult to understand them. The control panel is new (in blue).
Appearance TP-Link TL-MR6400
Traditionally, we start with a box
Inside is the router itself, a power adapter, a network cable, and various pieces of paper. Everything is well and securely packaged.
Glossy plastic is beautiful. But the black glossy plastic from which the cover of this router is made collects fingerprints very strongly. Well, the dust on it is very noticeable. The bottom of the router is made of matte plastic. At the top is an embossed TP-Link logo. Below are indicators that can only be seen when the router is turned on. They glow blue.
And another photo.
From below, everything is standard – holes for cooling, holes that allow you to hang the router on the wall, and a sticker with factory information.
All ports, connectors, and buttons are located on the back of the router. There we have a power connector, 4 LAN ports (one of them works as a WAN), a POWER On / Off button, a separate button for turning Wi-Fi off and on, and a WPS / Reset button. Well, the most interesting thing is the slot for a micro-SIM SIM card.
On other sites, I saw information that the antennas are removable. But it’s not. I don’t know, maybe it depends on the hardware version. Let me remind you that I have a TL-MR6400 v3.
