A security researcher detected a vulnerability in Chromium that, if abused, would have allowed an attacker to obtain access to a computer’s contents. The vulnerability was discovered by the researcher.
Many people prefer to use WhatsApp on their desktop computers or laptops, and the software is available for use on both Mac and Windows operating systems. As a result, the WhatsApp desktop app has garnered a good amount of attention. A recent disclosure of a rather serious security flaw caused a great deal of concern, and if you are one of the millions of people who use WhatsApp’s desktop app, it is strongly suggested that you update the apps as soon as possible by going to the Microsoft Store on Windows or the MacOS App Store on Macs. This is because the flaw could allow unauthorised users to access your messages. The vulnerability, which was discovered by security researcher Gal Weizmann, reportedly found that a hacker could simply send a malicious link and use WhatsApp’s vulnerability to gain elevated access to a user’s files on their respective desktops and laptops by exploiting the flaw. The problem at hand is not something that is unique to either Windows or Mac in particular. In point of fact, the problem is with the Chromium software platform, which is the foundation for Google’s Chrome browser, which is used by an extremely large number of users. It just so happens that WhatsApp’s desktop app is constructed on the Electron sub-platform, which in turn is based on Chromium. This is a happy coincidence. Electron was reportedly utilised by WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, in order to move its online app, which operates within browsers, into a desktop software that is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. This was presumably done in order to speed up the development process. As a direct consequence of this, WhatsApp’s desktop application was also susceptible to the weakness that actually exploited the vulnerability in Chromium.

Using this weakness, any hacker in question might have gotten access to the PCs and laptops, and then proceeded to examine user files, many of which may have housed confidential data in the form of bank papers, private movies, and other similar types of information. It is not apparent whether this hole also let attackers achieve elevated system privilege and affect systems from deep down as well; but, given that there is always a momentary chance that such hacks would occur, the issue is a pretty serious one. It has been reported that once Facebook was made aware of the vulnerability, the company promptly released a security patch for the WhatsApp desktop applications available for both Windows and Mac operating systems.
