A mental health retreat is a way to escape from the nonstop stressors of daily life and take time for yourself. For some people, it’s an annual vacation they use as a recharge. Other people use the break to cope with symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental illnesses that cannot be treated by typical means.
What is the difference between a traditional mental health treatment and a mental health retreat? While traditional therapy involves a physical setting and mental health professionals, mental health retreats tend to be more social in nature. The process is usually voluntary, where people can come as often as they want and stay as long as they need. Typically, however, participants will get at least one session of in-person counseling before the retreat begins.
Offsite counselling is not for everyone, but it’s an option for some. [Caution: This article may not be for everyone, but it’s an option for some.]
If you’re considering offsite counselling or a mental health retreat, ask yourself these three questions:
- Am I a good candidate? If you’re someone who needs to face stuff head-on, this could be the event for you. If you’re someone who doesn’t like facing things head-on, this might not be the event for you.
- What kind of environment do I want to facilitate? [Caution: Don’t assume that what worked for one person will work for you. While some people react well to the social in typical therapy, others prefer more individualized treatment.] Onsite therapy is often the ideal setting for people who prefer one-on-one time with a mental health professional and aren’t too great in groups.
- Offsite therapy is better for people who are social and like to interact with others. [Caution: It is not good therapy to force yourself into a group or interaction that you’re not comfortable with. You might think (or hope) that the interaction will be fun, but remember, the goal is treatment of your mental health issues, not having a nice time.]

I am going to talk about a book called “Cults Inside”. That is what this article is going to be about. This book was published by The Hoffman Institute, who are professional counselors and therapists that help people break free from cults.
Process counselling is a popular mental health treatment method that assists individuals in understanding and dealing with complex issues such as grief, anxiety and addiction. It takes a deeper dive into these concerns to help people achieve the best possible outcomes. However, the model was designed for individual therapy but recently has been adapted for group formats too. Group process counselling sessions are gaining popularity because they enable many clients to work on problems simultaneously instead of waiting one-on-one with their therapist.
