2024 Ford Transit Custom Adds Diesel, PHEV and EV Powertrain

Ford has revealed the new Transit Custom, following the recent debut of its all-electric sibling, the e-Transit. From 2023, the next generation of Ford’s popular lightweight vehicle will be available with EcoBlue, PHEV and EV diesel engines, and a variety of body styles.

As expected, the Transit Custom looks very similar to the e-Transit Custom, with the same bodywork. However, the grille has been changed with horizontal slits and openings to cool the engine, which comes with side intakes on ICE-only models. Unfortunately, Ford hasn’t included a detailed library of all six trim levels (Base, Trend, Limit, Active, Trail, and Sport).

The Transit Custom plug-in hybrid combines a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and battery, similar to the Ford Kuga 2023 / Escape PHEV. Ford hasn’t revealed power output but we suspect it will be close to the SUV’s 222bhp (165kW/225PS) rating. The 11.8 kWh (useful capacity) battery performs well over an electric range of up to 57 km (35 miles), while owners can use it to power smart tools and devices. via the ProPower Onboard system.

However, we can spot some specific styling cues from the group photo, including the unpainted bumpers and different headlight graphics of the entry-level base, Trail’s aluminum skid plates. , the extended Sport side panels and the integrated charging port front-panel of the PHEV and EV models.

Transit Custom is based on an “all-new” architecture, which will be shared with the upcoming VW Transporter. Various body options include standard valve, dual cabin valve, kombi and L-shaped baffle. The model comes in two lengths and two roof heights.

After that, Ford is expected to introduce the passenger-focused Tourneo Custom, which plays the role of a family minivan. Inside the cabin, there’s a 13-inch touchscreen for the latest SYNC4 infotainment, though it’s unclear if this feature will be standard across the lineup or only on high-end models.

We can also see some always-on touch shortcuts below the screen. The flat bottom steering wheel integrates tiltable buttons, creating a mobile office area. All equipment features the Ford Pro connected services and software platform, including the Ford Pro Upfit integration system that enables digital vehicle transformation through existing infotainment and mobility services. engine designed by Ford Pro to improve usability.

The ICE-only model features an upgraded version of the EcoBlue diesel engine. It will be offered in different capacities, starting at 109 hp (81 kW / 110 hp), 134 hp (100 kW / 136 hp), 148 hp (110 kW / 150 hp) or 168 hp (125 kW / 170 hp).

In addition to the standard six-speed manual transmission that can be combined with an optional mechanical limited-slip differential, the Transit Custom also has an eight-speed automatic transmission and an optional new all-wheel drive system. According to Ford, the maximum towing capacity of the automatic AWD model is 2,500 kg (5,512 pounds).

Finally, the all-electric e-Transit comes with an electric motor producing 214 hp (217 PS / 160 kW) and 415 Nm (306 lb-ft) of torque, and a 74-cell battery. The larger kWh offers a 236-mile (380 km) WLTP range.

Ford will introduce the new Transit Custom / e-Transit Custom at the IAA Transportation Show in Hannover (Germany). The LCV will be manufactured by Ford Otosan in Turkey. Deliveries of diesel models will begin in mid-2023, with PHEV and EV versions to be offered later in 2023. Your comments are welcomed below this section.
