How to Help Your Kids Organize Their Rooms

Intro

As kids are too young to understand the importance of a neat, well-organized room, it is up to parents to help them realize that. Besides that, parents also need to provide their kids with help on the best ways to organize their things. It is true, though, that it would be much faster if you did it while they’re at school, but that isn’t going to help them in the long run. The most helpful thing you can do for your kids is to show them how to clean and organize their rooms. Sure, it will take more time and you need to be patient, but it is a skill they’ll need in life.

The first thing you need to do is declutter and clean. When you have finished that, you can move on to the other aspects of room organization. One o the first things you should do is add plenty of child-friendly storage solutions. Then, you should work on organizing clothes, books and toys as these are mostly things children have in their rooms. And last but not least, you should take pictures of the finished room – keep reading to learn about the reasons for doing so.

Start with decluttering and cleaning

Whatever you’re organizing, you should start with decluttering and cleaning it first. It makes organization possible in the first place and easier, in the second. Clutter in children’s rooms is often broken or unused toys, ripped or outgrown clothes. Of course, you could always get more containers for all the toys and other things, but that’s just piling things up. If your child has too many toys, you could consider evaluating them. Ask your child to pick out toys they don’t really use or play with ever or too often and donate them. Explain that it would be better to have someone who really enjoys them take care of them. Also, you can note that it is more difficult to clean and keep organized a room that’s overstuffed. Lastly, throw out all the broken toys – you’ll save up precious space.

Add plenty of child-friendly storage solutions

As there are plenty of things to be stored in kids’ rooms, there is a need for extra storage solutions. These solutions need to be simple, easily accessible and child-friendly. One of the great ways to add storage is with see-through boxes with lids. This is a great option as very young kids can’t read, but they can see what’s in the box. In that way, they can collect toys in the boxes intended for them. You can also print out an image of what’s supposed to go there and glue it on the box.

Organize clothes

Clothes and accessories make up a big deal of the things present in children’s rooms. The wardrobe should be suitable for kids, with plenty of shelves, drawers and rods. You can also use baskets or boxes. Make sure that the kids can reach all the things they need.

When it comes to the best ways to organize kids’ clothes, you can use the methods you’ve seen in shops. If you can’t think of anything, next time you go shopping pay attention to the ways shops organize wholesale clothing. You can use the same principles, only adjusted for kids. That means simple and accessible.

Organize books and toys

After clothes, kids have other things such as books and toys in their rooms. As we already mentioned, you should consider additional storage options. You can then use those additional storage options to store all the toys. Divide them into categories. For instance, you can designate a separate box for cars, dolls, stuffed animals, Legos and so on. When it comes to storing books, you should install some kids’ bookshelves and display them along with board games and puzzles. Another thing you should definitely teach your kid is to make the bed every morning. It’s one of the simplest chores.

Take a picture

The last step is quite important. It involves taking pictures of the finished room. You’re probably wondering what the reason for that is. You should take pictures of the whole room and its separate parts, involving toys and books, inside of closets and desks. Print them out and stick the photos to the back of the door. The kids can then use those photos as a reference for future cleaning and organisation. Even though it seems irrelevant, it is not. As kids have short attention and memory span, this is a great way to stimulate independence.

Things you teach your kids at a very young age is what they remember their whole life. This is the right time to instil some habits.
