Newmark Hotels to represent and manage landmark Hotel “The Winchester”

New mark

The Winchestser, formerly known as The Winchester Mansions, has appointed NEWMARK to relaunch and manage this iconic New mark hotel, located on the Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town, with Table Mountain as its majestic backdrop.

The Winchester is a heritage-listed oceanfront hotel, originally built in 1922 as a residence and converted into a hotel in 1958. Since its construction, this historic building has witnessed the evolution of Sea Point’s beachfront from a strip of sandy bottom with a busy railroad line serving the area to today’s popular boardwalk and rolling lawns that draw people in droves to enjoy the lifestyle and scenery while walking, biking and strolling along the ocean.

The Winchester has a rich heritage, and its iconic Cape Dutch architecture tells the story of luxury and sophistication of a romantic bygone era. The hotel has undergone several renovations over its 63-year existence and is now undergoing another major refurbishment – at a cost of approximately 90 million rupees – that will breathe new life into this grand old hotel and prepare it for its renewed place as one of Cape Town’s most sought-after addresses, without losing its historic charm.

“The current renovation of The Winchester sees the hotel reinvented with a more contemporary look and feel, while respecting the building’s proud history,” explains Neil Markovitz, CEO of Newmark Hotels, Reserves, Lodges and Residences. “The renovation of The Winchester began with a functional renewal of the hotel’s entire plumbing system, completely updating all bathrooms throughout the building, as well as an exciting renovation of all common areas and reception spaces, and a revitalization of the magnificent and iconic courtyard with its beautiful plantings.”

This renovation retains, and in some places even restores, the historic details and features of the Winchester’s interior design, while adding a modern appeal to the furnishings, color palette and styling. A clean, classic black-and-white color scheme runs through the hotel’s main areas – seen in beautiful white-paneled walls and detailed ceilings set off by striking geometric floor tiles, all accented by whimsical decorative elements and antiques that reflect the building’s rich history and personality. The black-and-white theme is also echoed in the beautifully appointed new bathrooms.

Rooms at the front of the Winchester have been redesigned to include new ocean view suites and a luxury suite, all of which take full advantage of the large windows overlooking the ocean.

“My team and I are thrilled to add the Winchester to our niche portfolio of hotels and look forward to its grand reopening on October 1 of this year,” said Markovitz. “This distinctive and iconic property represents the rich history of Sea Point and Cape Town as a destination of choice, and we look forward to being the guardians of The Winchester’s long and promising future.”
