SPORTS: Former unified world champion Khan retires

The former world champion Amir Khan has announced his retirement from the sport following an impressive 17-year professional career.

The Briton 35 year old is a former unification light-welterweight world champion who also won silver in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

His last fight was a knockout in the sixth round against a rival Kell Brook, who was also retired this week.

“It’s time to hang up my gloves,” Khan posted on social media. “I feel blessed to have had such an amazing career that has spanned over 27 years. “

Through Olympic silver to world title glory

His victory over Zab Judah back in 2011 earned Zab Judah the IBF belt and the united champion title. His career also included remarkable victories against such fighters as Marcos Maidana, Devon Alexander and Luis Collazo, all further solidifying his place as a British legend.

However, his professional career hasn’t been without setbacks, too. He’s been incredibly eliminated in the hands of Danny Garcia and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and suffered defeats to Lamont Peterson as well as current pound-for-pound top player Terence Crawford.

Although those losses leave an ominous mark on his record, Khan has often been applauded for his willingness to face the toughest opponents and not shirk when faced with a contest.
