Tips for Making Sandwiches on Family Outings

Tips for Making Sandwiches

Going on a big family outing? Maybe you’re going on a picnic, going to an amusement park, swimming or even attending a sporting event. If you bring your own sandwiches, you can save money on big family trips.

Here are some tips for making easy-to-pack sandwiches.

  • When we go on family trips, we always use sliced bread for our sandwiches. This is important for a number of reasons. Most coolers don’t have much room for drinks and ice on the line. So four or five sandwiches made from buns just don’t fit. Also, many kids don’t like Hoagie rolls. Finally, bread wrappers can be reused as buttered bread bags.
  • As silly as it sounds, we recommend that all sandwiches be the same. You can make a ham and cheese sandwich on white bread or a turkey white and cheese sandwich on wheat bread. Why? A simple sandwich will deter Uncle Joe from eating the McDonald’s special sandwich. This helps avoid unnecessary problems on family outings.
  • Keep sandwiches as simple as possible. The basics of a sandwich should consist of only meat, cheese, and bread. Mayonnaise, mustard, or even lettuce and tomatoes can soften the bread. Sandwiches with wet bread are not preferred. Buy small restaurant bags of mayonnaise or mustard and fill them with lettuce, tomatoes, and other condiments. You can put all of this on the sandwich right before you eat it.
  • Butter the whole loaf, even if you are making peanut butter sandwiches. This is especially important if you are making the sandwiches the night before a family outing. A small layer of butter or margarine keeps the bread from getting mushy. This small layer is appropriate if you want to spread mustard on the sandwich.
  • Cut the sandwich in half, diagonally. This way, the kids can nibble on the best part of the sandwich. Once you have finished the sandwich with the core, wrap it in paper towels. This way, you’ll have napkins on hand when you want to serve the sandwiches. Then layer them on top of the loaf of bread. Place the spice packets on top and seal the bread wrapper.
  • If you are going to make separate sandwiches, use different colored napkins to indicate the different types of sandwiches. The turkey and cheese can be split in half at the top and bottom, while the ham and cheese can be cut in half diagonally. That way you’ll know exactly what you’re getting, without it taking too much effort.
  • How about hot dogs for a family outing? Cook the hot dogs and put them in a thermos of boiling water. That way they will stay hot until you eat them. All you need are hot dog buns and tongs to remove the hot dogs from the thermos. Hot dogs are perfect for eating at sporting events or when it’s a little cool outside.

That’s all you need to make the perfect sandwich for your next family outing. Of course, don’t forget to bring napkins, sides like potato salad and drinks.
